The story takes place in 1929, where George (Bradley Cooper) and his newlywed wife Salina (Jennifer Lawrence) travel a long distance to the deep mountains of North Carolina, determined to establish their own lumber empire. Facing harsh living conditions, the newcomer Salina shows a remarkably strong side; despite being a woman, she is skilled in snake catching and hunting, and doesn't fall short of her husband, even saving his life in an accident. With Salina's support, George makes significant gains, delivering heavy blows to their business rivals. However, by chance, Salina discovers George's secret—he has an illegitimate child, which is a devastating news for Salina, who is unable to conceive. An enraged Salina is determined to eliminate this innocent child.
