Wan Li (Edward G. Robinson) is a knowledgeable and esteemed university professor. In a local club, there hangs a portrait of a beautiful woman, and Wan Li, like the other men, is deeply captivated by the beauty in the painting. One day, as Wan Li stands in front of the portrait, lost in thought, he is stunned to see the woman from the painting, alive before him; her name is Alice (Joan Bennett). Under Alice's invitation, Wan Li visits her home, where the two open a bottle of wine, preparing for a romantic evening. However, at that critical moment, Alice's boyfriend bursts in, furious at Wan Li. In the struggle, Wan Li accidentally kills Alice's boyfriend, and the events of that night ruin Wan Li’s life forever.
