Mumble is an odd one in the emperor penguin family, often facing exclusion and discrimination—because in the emperor penguin community, not being able to sing is considered shameful, and Mumble is exactly that kind of penguin. However, he excels at dancing, yet his extraordinary skills do not bring him luck, leading the iron-faced leader to banish him from the tribe. Mumble wanders the outside world but encounters another group: the Adelie penguins. This group loves to dance and calls themselves the "2266 Dance Troupe." They are amazed by Mumble's dance moves and invite him to a dance party. However, on the way to the party, Mumble meets a drifter stepping to a rock-and-roll beat, who guides him to unravel the mysteries in his heart: why the penguin's food is becoming scarcer, why there are large iron ships at sea, and why the people on those ships are cruel to penguins. Thus, Mumble tracks down an iron-hulled ship, entering the world of humans.
