After divorcing her husband, the daughter leaves her 10-year-old son Jingjing (Fei Yang) with her elderly father (Zhu Xu), who lost his wife years ago and now lives alone in a southern city, under the pretext of "learning Peking opera". Many years ago, the once-famous Peking opera musician was estranged from his daughter due to his dissatisfaction with her marriage and her evasion of Peking opera. Their initial meeting is awkward, and he harbors an inexplicable resentment towards Jingjing. Upon unexpectedly learning about his daughter’s divorce, the father feels both guilt and newfound affection for Jingjing, and their relationship begins to normalize. The grandfather and grandson visit the Buddhist nun Lian Gu (Wang Yumei), who also lives alone. Lian Gu's words introduce Jingjing to life, and he notices that his grandfather and Lian Gu have developed a mutual respect akin to that of a couple. Lian Gu receives a letter from her husband, who has been out of contact for 40 years, sent from Taiwan. The news weighs heavily on the grandfather, but Lian Gu does not hear from her husband; instead, she receives tragic news and soon falls seriously ill and dies. On her deathbed, Lian Gu expresses her deep gratitude for the grandfather's years of care and hopes that he can help her find peace in the afterlife. To fulfill Lian Gu’s wish, the grandfather prepares to sell his huqin with a heavy heart, but at that moment, Jingjing gives him unexpected comfort.
