An elderly woman named Vera at a nursing home rolls down the stairs in her wheelchair, dying on the spot. Her caregiver, Dolores (Kathy Bates), stands nearby with a weapon in hand. Dolores is the only suspect. She has been Vera's maid for 40 years and has suffered from her employer's abuse and perverse demands, leading to the case being easily framed as a murder motivated by resentment and the desire for revenge. The police have been trying to convict her and sentence her to 20 years in prison. This case catches the attention of Dolores's daughter, Selina (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a journalist in New York. She personally gets involved in tracking the case and reunites with her estranged mother, living together for a few days. This forces her to revisit dark pasts, while Dolores often reminisces about her daughter as a child. Meanwhile, a demonic figure from her memory is awakened—her husband, who often abused her.
