This film is a biographical account of the two great French Symbolist poets, Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, primarily based on real historical records. In 1871, 17-year-old poet Rimbaud (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) accepts the invitation of the already famous poet Verlaine (played by David Thewlis) to go to Paris. At that time, Verlaine was already married, and his wife came from a wealthy family. However, he became obsessed with the talented, arrogant, eccentric, and free-spirited Rimbaud. He abandoned his wife and began to wander with Rimbaud in London, living a life of indulgence and poverty together. During their tumultuous two years of cohabitation, they chased each other, harmed each other, and were constantly in conflict. In 1873, during their last fight, Verlaine shot and injured Rimbaud, was arrested, and sentenced to two years in prison. Afterward, Rimbaud returned home alone, drifting around and experiencing various hardships, even engaging in arms dealing, ultimately passing away at the age of 37 in Marseille.
