In the summer of 1865, Kyoto, the Shinsengumi, established by the Tokugawa shogunate with strict laws, selected new members. Lower-ranked samurai Tashiro Byōzō (played by Asano Tadanobu) and handsome youth Kanna Sōzaburō (played by Matsuda Ryūhei) were chosen for their exceptional swordsmanship. Upon joining, Kanna excelled in carrying out orders to execute members who violated the law. There were rumors in the team that Kanna and Tashiro were a couple, while Kanna also had an ambiguous relationship with another member, Yuzawa Tōjirō. Soon, Tōjirō was killed, and Yamazaki, who had taken Kanna to entertainment venues several times, was also ambushed. The Shinsengumi leaders Kondo and Hijikata (played by Kitano Takeshi) identified Tashiro as the murderer based on a dagger left at the scene and ordered Kanna to take down Tashiro. However, in reality, all the deaths were orchestrated by Kanna, whose beauty had thrown the entire Shinsengumi into chaos.
