In Frankfurt in 1946, a group of Jewish survivors who escaped the Nazi Holocaust dream of starting over in America. The eloquent David gathers his friends to capitalize on this difficult time and showcase his persuasive talents to make a hefty profit off the Germans. Just as the funds are almost raised and a bright future seems within reach, David is suspected of being a Nazi collaborator and called in for questioning. He spins a tale that is elaborate and seamless, but is it all just to clear his name, or is he hiding a darker truth? German director Sam Garbarski unveils another absurd satire with this social comedy, following "Irina Palm." The film is adapted from the work of German-Romanian author Michel Bergmann, with characters inspired by the real-life experiences of the author's friends and family, delving into a group seldom discussed in World War II narratives—the Jews who remained in Germany after the Holocaust. Instead of a tragic lament over the trauma of post-war life, it uses a self-deprecating absurdist German humor to address the painful history that is hard to articulate. If life becomes unbearable, one should decorate it with light-hearted lies.
