The story takes place in Northern Europe at the end of the 19th century, where chaotic conditions and a declining economy have left the people in dire straits. Farmer Lasse Karsen (Max von Sydow) arrives in Denmark with his son Pelle (Pelle Hvenegaard), hoping to earn a more decent living with his own hands. However, reality is far from what they imagined. The father and son manage to find work cleaning stables at a farm, but with nowhere else to go, they can only sleep on straw alongside the horses. During the day, they must endure the harshness and exploitation of their employer, leading a life of unbearable hardship. The laborer Erik (Björn Granath) actively leads the workers in a struggle against their oppressive steward, and Erik's free spirit deeply inspires Pelle, prompting him to decide to leave the estate and seek new opportunities.
