Thomas (John Bell) lost his parents at a young age and grew up in an orphanage. Due to his stutter, Thomas has always been an unconfident and introverted boy, often bullied in the orphanage. One day, after causing trouble, Thomas is called into the principal's office, where he meets a lady named Mary (Connie Nielsen), who becomes Thomas's new mother. Mary’s husband, Eric (Aidan Quinn), doesn’t like Thomas; he wants a more confident and outgoing child, and thus is very cold towards him. Fortunately, Thomas quickly makes many new friends, and with their encouragement, his personality gradually becomes more cheerful. In a mysterious cave, Thomas meets a seal, which he names Smudge, and a strong friendship develops between the boy and the animal.
