One of the leaders of the resistance, Jebier, kills a German guard and escapes from an international concentration camp. Soon after, Jebier goes to Britain to receive an award from General de Gaulle, but upon learning that his temporary replacement, Felix, has been captured, he takes a plane back home overnight to rescue him. After many twists and turns, they are unable to save their comrade, and Felix and his close friend François commit suicide in prison by poison. Later, Jebier is also captured, and Mathilde carefully plans to rescue him. During Jebier's recovery, however, Mathilde is captured and the enemy threatens her with her daughter as a hostage to force her to divulge information about her comrades; ultimately, she dies at the hands of her peers. The characters in this film differ from heroes in romantic works; although they fight for collective and national interests, they can also succumb to emotional weaknesses and personal motives. The film has a deep tone, heavy colors, and realistically restores the harsh and cruel combat life of the French underground resistance during World War II, shaping several heroes through a low-key, plain documentary style, vividly depicting their isolated and perilous circumstances. The film employs various artistic methods to powerfully express the author's reflections on the resistance movement and its era. It has been officially released in mainland China, with standout performances by the male and female leads.
