Ah Ying is the only daughter of the county magistrate of Lumen. Having witnessed her mother being subjected to the brutal "wooden horse" torture and dying tragically due to the crime of adultery in her childhood, she is left with a psychological shadow. As an adult, she is betrothed by her father to Wu Ju Feng Qingyun. Feng Qingyun is a hypocritical scholar who considers himself superior and looks down on beauty, avoiding direct gaze at the stunning Ah Ying while secretly peeping at her. The couple does not act like a married pair and harbors resentment. While returning to her maternal home, they rest under a tree, at which point the infamous flower thief Xiong Yan (played by Dan Liwen) approaches them slowly. The county head is waiting for them and orders a search. The head of the county office (played by Gao Jie) has long secretly loved Ah Ying and, feeling anxious, reaches the large tree only to find the corpse of Wu Ju lying there. A small peddler selling powdered water (played by Huang Yao Ming) sneaks around, and the head immediately questions him, who reveals what he has seen. However, he is unaware that there is more to the story, and a terrifying shadow is slowly approaching the county office... 蔡康永 has been reluctant to mention this film again after completing the script, which shows his fear and respect for the film's horror elements. The movie creates a tense and eerie underworld with its unique static visual style. Very distinctive.
