In the traditional trading town of Porto in the mid-19th century, proud wealthy young man Augusto, a friend of writer Camilo, falls in love with Fanny, the young daughter of an English officer. After facing obstacles and several breakups, they finally get married. However, after the marriage, Augusto becomes distant towards Fanny due to her correspondence with Camilo. Subsequently, Fanny falls ill from tuberculosis and descends into death amid the oppressive loneliness of married life. Augusto soon follows in Fanny's footsteps, burdened by the trials of fate. This film is Oliveira's masterwork, telling a tale of destructive love among the nobility during a time of social upheaval, using bold stillness to capture the essence of the unique aesthetic personalities of noble men.
