Adapted from the novel of the same name by Xu Guixiang. The blacksmith's son, Shi Pingyang, joins the artillery unit with his father's instructions. His enthusiasm catches the attention of the battalion commander, Zhuang Bichuan, and the old squad leader, Li Sihu, also appreciates Shi Pingyang's determination to not give up. Li Sihu is a technical expert who is very strict in training new soldiers, and the new recruits improve quickly. He sees Shi Pingyang as a successor, intending to pass on all his experience before his discharge, even pretending to be ill to make Shi Pingyang independently complete training tasks. Shi Pingyang progresses rapidly and is awarded third-class merit at the end of the year. The female soldier, Zhang Mei, who enlisted at the same time, also regards him differently. The training unit recruits key personnel, and entering the training unit allows one to apply for military academies and become an officer. The battalion commander worries that Shi Pingyang's absence during the competition will affect the results, so he reallocates Wang Beifeng, who enlisted alongside Shi Pingyang, to the training unit. When the opportunity slips away, Shi Pingyang finds it hard to understand. After the death of his father, the instructor wants him to return home to handle affairs, but halfway there, remembering his father's instructions, he resolutely returns to the company. After Li Sihu is discharged, Shi Pingyang takes over as squad leader, inheriting all the good traditions from the old squad leader, loving the soldiers, the artillery, and the unit, while continuously honing his skills. Wang Beifeng and Zhang Mei, who enlisted at the same time, go to military academy, while Shi Pingyang remains a squad leader. When the platoon leader is reassigned, Shi Pingyang becomes the acting platoon leader, and by this time, he has served for eight years. To retain him, the regiment asks him to prepare for the military academy entrance exam. At this time, a letter of complaint from new soldier Liu Fazhan, although prompted by circumstances, is seriously inaccurate, which causes Shi Pingyang to lose his chance to attend military academy. Shi Pingyang is about to be discharged, but the deputy commander, Zhuang Bichuan, is reluctant to see him leave and brings him back from the station; the regiment's party committee decides to keep him. Shi Pingyang returns to the platoon and trains Liu Fazhan even more strictly and patiently, making Liu Fazhan feel deeply guilty. Years later, Staff Officer Wang Beifeng inspects the unit and finds Shi Pingyang still a sergeant, which stirs up many emotions. During a military exercise in the group army, Shi Pingyang commands the artillery group's accurate firing, earning admiration from the leaders and commanders. The artillery he has operated for many years is replaced by new models; though he feels somewhat reluctant, he immediately starts learning how to operate the new artillery with his comrades to face new challenges. Soon after, Shi Pingyang is exceptionally promoted to lieutenant and becomes a company commander.
