In 1957, French actress (Emmanuelle Riva) came to Hiroshima, Japan, to shoot a film promoting peace, where she met a local architectural engineer (Eiji Okada). During their brief time together, they forgot their respective married statuses and developed a passionate romance. However, due to the unique history of Hiroshima, the actress often found herself haunted by brutal images of war during their intimate moments, and the engineer would remind her of her love affair with a German soldier during the occupation of her small town in France. After filming ended, the tormented actress felt that the only thing she could do was to fully surrender herself to the architect in the limited time they had left.
