Lee (Casey Affleck) is a depressed and reclusive handyman who returns to his hometown, Manchester by the Sea, after learning of his brother Joe's (Kyle Chandler) death to handle Joe's affairs. According to Joe's will, Lee is to become the guardian of Joe's son Patrick (Lucas Hedges), and Lee plans to take Patrick back to Boston. However, it is clear that Patrick is unwilling to leave his hometown and friends, and Lee is also reluctant to linger in this place of sorrow. It turns out that Manchester holds a desperate memory for Lee; his negligence caused the deaths of three children, and his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) left him because of it. Upon his return to his hometown, Lee encounters Randi again, who has remarried and is about to become a mother. At the same time, Patrick's long-lost mother Alice (Gretchen Mol) also contacts Patrick, hoping that he can become part of her new family.
