Nigel (Hugh Grant) is caught in a seven-year itch in his marriage. He and his wife Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas) decide to take a cruise to India to try to salvage their troubled relationship. On board, he encounters the paralyzed writer Oscar (Peter Coyote) and his beautiful wife Mimi (Emmanuelle Seigner). Oscar seems poised to reveal the unusual relationship between him and Mimi to the stranger Nigel. Oscar and Mimi were madly in love when they first met, their passion burning fiercely. However, Mimi's captivating charm only mesmerized Oscar for a short time. He begins to grow weary, and despite Mimi's deep devotion to him, including having an abortion and a hysterectomy, Oscar cruelly sends her away. After a car accident, Oscar finds himself in the hospital, shocked to see Mimi standing at his bedside, furious as she drags him out of the bed; Oscar ends up permanently disabled. They continue to live together. Mimi has never stopped abusing Oscar, yet they still love each other. When Mimi meets Fiona, a wonderful love ignites in her heart, and the two embrace and dance. In the end, Oscar pulls the trigger at Mimi.
