Nearing forty, Gurov meets Anna, a young woman with a dog, on the shores of the Black Sea in Yalta. After a week of interaction, Gurov wins Anna’s affection and they begin a passionate love affair. A few days later, Anna receives news of her husband's illness and hurries back to City C, while Gurov returns to Moscow to live a dull life with his wife, who is ten years older than him. Gurov gradually realizes he cannot live without Anna, goes to City C to find her, and they agree to meet every three months in a hotel in Moscow, embarking on a bittersweet love affair.
