In Germany in 1942, 17-year-old Friedrich (played by Max Riemelt) trains hard, dreaming of one day joining the Nazi training camp. After passing numerous tests, he gets the opportunity, but his father strongly opposes it. So, he forges his father's signature on the paperwork, successfully becoming a member of the training camp and beginning his grueling daily training. There, he meets Albrecht (played by Tom Schilling), the son of a German officer, and the two develop a deep friendship. However, Albrecht is not enthusiastic about the Nazis and prefers literature and writing instead. Albrecht's father hopes his son will become a Nazi officer like him, leading to continuous conflicts between them. In the training camp, Friedrich and Albrecht discover many ugly realities, causing Friedrich's beliefs to begin to waver. During a water training exercise, Albrecht never comes out of the water again... This film won the Best Original Screenplay award at the 2003 German Film Awards.
