Eli (played by John C. Reilly) and Charlie (played by Joaquin Phoenix) are a pair of assassin brothers who receive a task to assassinate a gold prospector. They quickly travel from Oregon to San Francisco, facing numerous troubles along the way, but they manage to overcome them with their wits and courage, ultimately reaching their destination safely. When they meet their target, they discover that the man named Warm (played by Riz Ahmed) is a chemist who has invented a magical potion that helps people find gold mines more quickly. Weighing their options, Eli and Charlie decide to quit their assassin jobs and become gold miners instead, not realizing the heavy price they would pay for this reckless decision.
