Esmeralda is a lively and passionate Gypsy girl, whose kind nature has won her the admiration and affection of many. The priest Claude of Notre Dame has long coveted Esmeralda's beauty and, unable to restrain himself any longer, sends his ugly bell-ringer servant Quasimodo to forcibly abduct Esmeralda to Notre Dame. Unexpectedly, along the way, the handsome and brave captain Phoebus intervenes, and Esmeralda falls head over heels for him. Phoebus falls victim to an attack by masked assailants, and Esmeralda is surprisingly blamed for it. She is sentenced to hang, but before her execution, Quasimodo rescues the imprisoned Esmeralda and hides her within Notre Dame. Initially, Esmeralda is wary of Quasimodo, but over time, she begins to understand that beneath Quasimodo's ugly exterior lies a heart of gold.
