Hank (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is an experienced lawyer specializing in helping the wealthy clean up their messes. In Hank's eyes, there is no such thing as justice; there are only eternal interests. The unexpected death of his mother forces Hank to return to his hometown in Indiana, a place filled with memories he would rather forget. In his hometown, Hank reunites with his estranged father Joseph (played by Robert Duvall), a stubborn man who has spent his life as a local judge. The tense relationship between father and son has not changed over the years. What Hank, who is eager to leave, does not expect is that a traffic accident pulls Joseph into a complicated legal case, and as he defends his father, the truth gradually comes to light.
