The lovesick sharpshooter Jackie (Mia Farrow) introduces her poor fiancé Simon Doyle (Simon MacCorkindale) to her friend Linnet Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) for a job at her estate. Shortly after, Simon marries Linnet, and the two go on a romantic honeymoon in Egypt. An angry Jackie follows them to Egypt, constantly harassing and entangling them. On a Nile cruise, Linnet discovers that many passengers, besides Jackie, harbor ill intentions. During a visit to the Karnak Temple, a massive stone falls from high up, nearly killing Simon and Linnet below. However, the murder plot against Linnet does not cease. Linnet escapes one attempt, but not a second. Ultimately, Linnet is brutally murdered in her bed, and her maid Louise (Jane Birkin) and Mrs. Salome Otterbourne (Angela Lansbury), who claimed to have witnessed the murderer, are silenced as well. In his investigation, detective Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) finds that, besides Jackie and Simon, nearly every passenger had ample motive and opportunity to commit the crime. So, who is the murderer? How did the crime unfold? And who pushed down the giant stone earlier?
