In 1999, in the city of Fenyi, Shanxi Province, the bright and cheerful girl Shen Tao (played by Zhao Tao) is caught between two men: the miner Liang Zi (played by Liang Jingdong) and the coal mine owner Zhang Jinsheng (played by Zhang Yi). This love triangle cannot maintain a lasting balance. The friendship between Liang Zi and Jinsheng falls apart. As the time for Tao's marriage approaches, someone chooses the distance. In 2014, after working in the coal mines for a long time, Liang Zi's health has deteriorated to an irreversible state. In his final moments, he returns to his hometown with his wife and child. At this point, Shen Tao and Jinsheng have already divorced, and Jinsheng lives in Shanghai with their child. In middle age, they find themselves helplessly standing on the brink of life and death.
