In the mid-19th century, Italy is under the harsh rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. To liberate his homeland, cavalry officer Angelo (played by Olivier Martinez) conspires to incite a rebellion to overthrow colonial rule, but due to a leak in the plan, he is forced to flee to France. Betrayed by a childhood friend, Angelo is hunted by Austrian spies in France. While on the run, Angelo inadvertently stumbles into a plague zone in France, where despair reigns and people are nearly mad. The locals believe it was Angelo who spread the poison, making him an unwarranted target of pursuit. One day, Angelo accidentally falls from a roof into an attic, where he meets Paulina (played by Juliette Binoche), a woman separated from her husband. Upon learning of Paulina's difficult situation, Angelo is determined to help her find her husband. While traversing the plague area, Paulina unfortunately contracts the disease…
