Francis (Eamonn Owens) lives in an unhappy family. His father is an alcoholic who often beats his weak and unstable mother when drunk. Joey is Francis's only friend, and the two often find amusement in teasing Philip (Andrew Fullerton). The harsh reality drives Francis to hide in the magical world of comics, filled with strange fantasies. After his mother finally has a mental breakdown and is sent to a asylum, Francis cannot endure his father's violence and leaves his hometown for Berlin to make a living. When he returns home again, he discovers that his mother has chosen to commit suicide. Due to a prank, Francis is sent to a reform school, where he suffers inhuman treatment. It is his religious beliefs that support him in continuing to live. After leaving the reform school, Francis finds a job at a slaughterhouse.
