Yuli (nickname of Carlos Acosta) is a gifted boy, undisciplined and uninterested in school, spending his days hanging out on the streets of Havana, battling in street dance. His father knows well that his son has a talent for dance and forcefully pulls him away from the streets, compelling him to attend the Cuban National Ballet School to learn ballet. Playful Yuli has no desire to wear tight pants and only wants to become a football star like the king of football, Billy, often expressing his reluctance through skipping classes and fighting. However, under the careful cultivation and guidance of the academy's teachers, he eventually dives headfirst into the enchanting world of dance. With his talent and hard work, he gradually creates his own life legend, becoming a dazzling principal dancer and breaking traditions by becoming the first black dancer to perform Romeo with the Royal Ballet in London, forging a brilliant 17-year career. ☆ BBC’s strong production ☆ Adapted from the autobiography of the greatest dancer of our generation, Carlos Acosta ☆ Created by Paul Laverty, the Oscar-winning writer of "I, Daniel Blake" ☆ Directed by Icíar Bollaín, the Oscar-winning director of "Even the Rain" ☆ Music by Oscar-nominated composer Alberto Iglesias from "The Constant Gardener" ✯ Won Best Screenplay at the San Sebastián International Film Festival ✯ Won Audience Award for Best Film at the Minsk International Film Festival in Belarus ✯ Nominated for Best Feature Film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival ✯ Nominated for 5 Goya Awards in Spain ✯ Nominated for Best New Actor, Cinematography, and Music at the Spanish Film Critics Awards ✯ Nominated for Best Original Score at the Spanish Forqué Awards ✯ Nominated for Best Feature Film at the Hamburg Film Festival in Germany ✯ Nominated for Best Feature Film at the Miami Film Festival
