In 1940, Lei Feng (played by Chen Haijie) was born into a poor family in Wangcheng, Hunan. When he was five years old, his father, Lei Mingliang (played by Jin Yonglin), was beaten to death by Japanese soldiers. To survive, young Lei Feng herded cattle for a landlord, while his older brother went to work as an apprentice in a dye factory in town, eventually dying from poverty and illness.
