Yukio Kinugasa (played by Masahiro Motoki) is a somewhat well-known writer who has been married to his wife, Natsuko (played by Eriri Fukatsu), for many years. Their relationship has long shifted from the initial passion to a mundane existence. Although Natsuko has always tolerated Yukio with her tenderness and honesty, he remains unmoved, responding with indifference and rudeness, as he has already fallen for another woman, Fukunaga (played by Hana Kuroki). One day, while Natsuko is traveling with a friend (played by Keiko Horiuchi), their bus meets with an accident, and unfortunately, both perish. Upon hearing the news of his wife's death, Yukio does not feel the slightest emotional upheaval, yet he pretends to be grieving. Afterward, Yukio's life descends into chaos; his editor despises him, and Fukunaga leaves him. Until one day, the husband of Natsuko's friend finds Yukio and asks him to help take care of his two children. Through this process, Yukio gradually learns to confront his weaknesses and shortcomings and rediscovers the meaning of life.
