Erin Brockovich (played by Julia Roberts) is a typical unfortunate soul. She has been married twice, but neither marriage brought her happiness; instead, it turned her into a single mother with three children. After a car accident, her bad luck continues as she loses the compensation case she was hoping to win. The lawyer defending her, Ed (played by Albert Finney), feels partly sympathetic towards Erin and partly guilty for losing the case. He offers her a job doing odd tasks at his law firm. Erin's life gains a bit of stability. While investigating a wastewater complaint case, Erin accidentally discovers toxic substances in the water, which the water company is dismissing. The weak woman Erin decides to take on the heavy burden of seeking justice for the hundreds of residents affected by the pollution!
