His daughter-in-law, Akiko (played by Setsuko Hara), has been a widow for some time, and relatives from the family try to set her up, but Akiko seems indifferent. In contrast, Manbei's mindset is quite active as he frequently meets with his former lover, Sasaki. Manbei's daughter, Yuriko, has grown up, but this fashionable girl, who is dating an American boyfriend, seems more concerned about gifts than whether Manbei is her biological father… Fumiko is quite dissatisfied with her father's actions but feels helpless. A young man who has feelings for Noriko goes to work in Sapporo, and the two can only express their concern through letters. With no progress in the marriage prospects for Akiko and the daughters, Manbei suddenly collapses from a myocardial infarction, but soon after waking up, he rushes back to his lover's house...
