After World War II, Grace (Nicole Kidman) raises her two children alone on an island in the UK, patiently waiting for her husband to return from the battlefield. The children are afraid of light, as exposure to it makes them ill, so the curtains in the house are always drawn tightly. In this dark old mansion, Grace welcomes three new servants. However, their arrival fills Grace with dread — the curtains are often opened, doors open for no reason, the piano plays by itself, and her daughter claims to see a strange man in the room. Grace falls into a state of mental distress; she cannot understand why these strange occurrences keep happening, nor why her husband has not yet returned. It is only in the end that she realizes that all the terror actually comes from within herself, but by then, it is too late...
