The story takes place in the mid-Edo period of Japan, where the cold-hearted financial officer of the Sendai domain, Kayaba Moku (played by Ryuhei Matsuda), pushes for harsh tax measures, shifting the financial burden entirely onto the farmers and merchants. Overwhelmed by the pressure, people either go bankrupt or flee with their families. The loss of household registrations does not awaken the authorities; rather, it spreads the existing taxes among those who remain, further worsening the situation. Concerned about the future of his hometown, sake brewer Gatayaya Juro (played by Takashi Abe) consults Sugawara Ya Tokuhira (played by Eita), who is said to be the smartest man in town, to devise a plan to lend money to the lord at high interest rates and earn massive profits. Afterward, Juro, along with his brother Asano Ya Jina (played by Satoshi Tsumabuki) and a group of friends, works together with the goal of raising funds; if they achieve their target, they stand to gain up to 1,000 taels in mortgage capital. Conversely, if their scheme is exposed, both will face execution by beheading… This film is adapted from the story "Gatayaya Juro," collected by Michifumi Iida in "Selfless Japanese," which is based on a true historical event in Miyagi Prefecture.
