A father drives his children away from the noisy city for a picnic in the wilderness. The happy sister (Jenny Agutter) and her brother never expected their father to suddenly lose control in the wasteland, pull out a gun, and shoot at them. Ultimately, their father dies in the explosion of the car. The siblings have no choice but to take the remaining supplies and traverse the desolate plains. Under the scorching sun, they spend a night among the rock piles, and the next day, when they are hungry and thirsty, they discover a small pond beneath a fruit tree. The resources of the small pond quickly run out, and in despair, they encounter a native man (David Gulpilil) who has come to hunt. The native stays to help them find water and food, and the three of them continue their journey across the wasteland until they find an abandoned cabin in the woods. While the brother and the native go to search for food, they unexpectedly discover a road, and the native witnesses white men shooting animals...
