Albert (Åke Grönberg) has bet his entire fortune and life on the circus he has painstakingly managed. Despite the business becoming increasingly bleak, he has no thoughts of giving up and decides to hold a grand performance to boost the morale of the troupe. Together with his lover Annie (Harriet Andersson), Albert visits a man named Schuberg (Gunnar Björnstrand), hoping to borrow some costumes for the show. Albert visits his long-separated wife Agda (Annika Tretow) and their children, expressing his desire to stay home and enjoy a peaceful old age, but is unexpectedly rejected. Soon after, Albert discovers the affair between Annie and his colleague Frans (Hasse Ekman). Fortunately, the circus performance turns out to be a success, and even though life is harsh, the days continue to pass slowly.
