Dreaming of becoming a star, girl Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) arrives in Los Angeles, only to have her money stolen by a thief on the street. A chance encounter with a boy, Drew Boley (Diego Boneta), leads him to offer her help, taking her to work as a waitress at the bar where he is employed. The bar owner, Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin), and his assistant, Lonny Barnett (Russell Brand), are troubled by the bar's financial crisis, and decide to invite rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) to perform. Sherrie and Drew are attracted to each other and fall in love. During a bar performance, due to the absence of a certain band, Drew and his band, Wolfgang Von Colt, get the chance to perform, receiving acclaim and gradually becoming a well-known band. However, Sherrie's fervent admiration for Stacee causes misunderstandings, leading to their break-up. Meanwhile, the Mayor's wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) promotes the idea that rock music is alluring yet immoral, going to great lengths to shut down Dennis's bar. Rock music faces a crisis in Los Angeles... This film is adapted from the musical of the same name.
