Chauncey (played by Peter Sellers), a simple-minded old gardener, has lived in an old house in Washington his entire life without ever leaving. His whole existence revolves around watching television, which has become his only means of communication with the outside world. Over time, his thoughts, behaviors, and worldview have been completely shaped by television. However, after the sudden death of his employer, Chauncey finds himself homeless and alone. Faced with a strange and new world, he becomes disoriented. Following an unexpected car accident, Chauncey unexpectedly becomes the guest of wealthy Washington businessman Eve (played by Shirley MacLaine) and Ben (played by Melvyn Douglas). Using the "vast" knowledge he gained from television, he astounds everyone and even becomes a trusted advisor to politicians. This politically satirical comedy, acclaimed in the late '70s, is Peter Sellers' final film. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 52nd Oscars in 1980 and received a nomination for Best Actor, as well as being shortlisted for the Palme d'Or at the 33rd Cannes Film Festival in 1980.
