The story follows crime novelist Charles (played by Dan Stevens) who encounters writer's block. He invites an eccentric mystic (played by Judi Dench) to perform a séance for inspiration, but accidentally summons the ghost of his ex-wife (played by Leslie Mann), who wants to kill Charles so they can reunite in the afterlife. Meanwhile, his current wife Ruth (played by Isla Fisher) cannot see the ghost and worries that her husband has gone completely insane.
