Hammerfest, located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, is the northernmost city in Norway. This small town experiences polar nights every year, with the sun permanently hidden below the horizon, leaving the city to linger between long nights and eternal dawns. Niels, a gas engineer from Germany, brings his wife Maria and son Markus to this place in hopes of saving his crumbling family. However, the new environment seems to do little for their relationship. Niels works day and night and has an affair. Maria works as a night caretaker in a terminal hospital, while their son Markus, at the tumultuous age of adolescence, struggles with escalating tensions with his new classmates. One night, a sudden car accident begins to thaw the three cold hearts. The precarious couple's relationship starts to change as they face the consequences of this event together, undergoing a psychological journey from panic - escape - guilt - hesitation - to confession, ultimately achieving redemption by telling the truth to the victims' parents.
