In 1990, it won the Best Film Award from Japanese Movie Critics. The film captures snippets of the lives of theater club members at a university through their performance of Chekhov's play of the same name, using only a handful of scenes. On the morning of the school's anniversary in April, the private Sakura Gakuin Women's School traditionally performs Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard." On that day, the actors gather in the dressing room. Among them, the most striking is the captain, Yuko Shimizu, who turns eighteen that day and has just curled her hair for the first time. These innocent girls discuss the incident from the previous day when third-year student Noriko Sugiyama, who plays the servant Yasha, was caught smoking by a teacher. They anxiously speculate whether the performance will go on as scheduled. The atmosphere settles only after some persuasion from the performance advisor. Under the direction of stage manager Kaori Shimamaru, preparations begin nervously. Main actor Tomoyko Kurata, who is playing the role for the first time, is lacking confidence and is very nervous. Yuko Shimizu, whom she has always admired, kindly encourages her. Sugiyama shows a complex emotion upon witnessing all this. The performance finally begins; the curtain rises slowly and the girls walk onto the stage with calm steps.
