Xiaoen (played by Maggie Cheung) returns from studying abroad to attend her sister's wedding. During this time, she realizes that the estrangement and conflicts with her mother, Kuizi (played by Lu Xiaofen), only deepen. It isn't until she accompanies her mother back to Japan for a family visit that she truly begins to understand her mother. It turns out that during the Anti-Japanese War, her mother went to Manchuria to seek refuge with her brother, where she met her father (played by Li Zixiong), who was then a military officer, and they got married.
