The story takes place in the mid-19th century during Japan's Tokugawa shogunate. The Tōkeiji temple in Kamakura, supported by the shogunate, offers help to women suffering under oppressive marriages, aiding them in successfully severing ties with their husbands. One day, the concubine of the unscrupulous merchant Hori-bito Saburōemon (played by Shinichi Tsutsumi), Ayan (played by Mitsushima Shinnosuke), and the blacksmith Aju (played by Eriko Todaka), who is cruelly exploited by her abusive husband (played by Junji Takeda), arrive at Tōkeiji together and meet the nephew of the temple's innkeeper Genbei (played by Kirin Kiki), Shinjiro (played by You Oizumi). Shinjiro is an apprentice doctor who attempts to treat Aju's burns while hoping to document the women's experiences to write a timeless script. Women from different backgrounds arrive one after another, all standing at a crossroads in their lives... This film is adapted from Inoue Yasushi's novel "Tōkeiji Hanadayori."
