The story takes place in Italy in 1962, during the peak of summer. Robert (played by Jean-Louis Trintignant) is a young and introverted student who tends to hide his little thoughts deep inside. Bruno (played by Vittorio Gassman) is a successful middle-aged man whose face reflects the proud confidence typical of a successful person, boasting about his "great achievements."
Fate brings these two unlikely individuals together as they become travel companions on a trip to Tuscany. At first, Robert admires Bruno greatly, viewing him as the epitome of a winner in life. However, as time passes, Bruno gradually reveals his capricious and calculating nature, leading Robert to ultimately realize that one should not judge anyone by appearances.
