The film is based on the true story of the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, telling the legendary adventure of him and five friends drifting on a wooden raft across the Pacific Ocean in 1947. The film, which is Norway's largest investment to date (20 million dollars), is adapted from real events and depicts the story of six adventurers crossing the Pacific on a makeshift wooden raft. The star of "The Thing" Pal Sverre Hagen plays the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl, along with five friends, set off from Peru in South America on a wooden raft, taking 101 days and covering 4,900 miles to reach the Polynesian islands in the South Pacific, achieving a miracle in the history of human navigation. He aimed to prove that ancient Peruvians, 1,400 years ago, reached Polynesia by crossing the Pacific on such primitive rafts. Heyerdahl documented this arduous journey in a book, translated into over 60 languages worldwide, and the documentary version won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1952, making him known as "the most famous Norwegian in the world." However, at the beginning of the story, his idea was met with ridicule from everyone. Behind the Scenes "Kon-Tiki" is a co-production between Norway, the UK, and Denmark, with the British producer Jeremy Thomas, known for collaborating with Bernardo Bertolucci on "The Last Emperor" and "Stealing Beauty." He is also the producer of recent major international productions like Wim Wenders' "Pina" and David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method." "Kon-Tiki" is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, who successfully released the box office hit "Max Manus" in Norway in 2008, which was also the country’s official representative for the Oscars that year. Director’s Statement What is the film about? It tells the life of the legendary explorer Heyerdahl and his true story of crossing the Pacific on a simple wooden raft in 1947. In other words, it’s a story about never giving up on chasing your dreams. What inspired "Kon-Tiki"? We both grew up in a small town in southern Norway called Sandefjord. Apart from films, we never had other pursuits or lifestyles. But when we were kids, the story of "Kon-Tiki" inspired us to chase our dreams, no matter how unreachable, and to never give up. We hope this film can also inspire people to take risks. To conquer the Matterhorn, sail to Cuba, drive Route 66—whatever it is, just pursue your dreams. What was the biggest challenge during preparation? There were many difficulties; it was a complete mess at the start. This was the most complicated film production we’ve ever experienced, but fortunately, there were many amazing people around us. Who influenced you during the shooting? "Jaws," of course, it is one of the greatest films of all time. We constantly sought inspiration from movies of the ’80s and ’90s. In our view, those years were the golden age of cinema. Trivia .
