Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson) faces twenty years of prison for stealing bread. After being released by Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush), his identity as an ex-convict causes him to face difficulties everywhere. Desperate, Valjean is taken in by a kind bishop (Peter Vaughan). Valjean steals silver from the bishop in an attempt to escape, but when he is caught, the bishop falsely claims the silver was a gift to Valjean. This act profoundly moves Valjean, leading him to decide to reform and live a better life. Ten years later, Valjean has assumed a new identity and become the mayor of a small town, where he meets the tragic factory worker Fantine (Uma Thurman). Valjean promises the dying Fantine that he will care for her young daughter Cosette (Claire Danes). Meanwhile, Javert, who has been tracking Valjean, also discovers the mayor's true identity.
