In the ancient city of Anyang, Henan, during the 1970s and 1980s, the sister (Zhang Jingchu), brother (Feng Ling), and younger brother (Lü Yulai) of a family of five embark on different life paths amidst a period of dramatic social transformation. The sister, in her early twenties, appears slim and quiet but has a strong and stubborn inner self; she is willing to sacrifice herself to achieve her dreams, yet the harshness of reality forces her to accept her fate after numerous setbacks. The brother, around twenty-three or twenty-four, has a mild cerebral disability due to an illness in childhood. His parents' love for him is tinged with extra care, and after being introduced to a shrewd and limping girl, he leads a life that he is quite satisfied with. The younger brother, seventeen or eighteen, is sensitive and melancholic, with an overly rich inner world. After being kicked out by his father due to certain issues, he begins searching for his own life outside, but all he gains is a transformation that leaves him unrecognizable over time.
