Young Bassanio (played by Joseph Fiennes) is determined to propose to the wealthy heiress Portia (played by Lynn Collins). To fulfill this wish, he must provide three thousand ducats, so he reluctantly turns to the kind-hearted merchant Antonio (played by Jeremy Irons) for a loan. Coincidentally, Antonio, due to business issues, can only borrow this money from the Jew Shylock (played by Al Pacino). Antonio has always harbored strong animosity towards Jews, and Shylock presents a shocking condition: Antonio must repay the money on time, or he will take a pound of flesh from Antonio. Bassanio finally manages to marry Portia, but Antonio finds himself in trouble due to business failures and Shylock's demand for repayment. Shylock intends to take this opportunity to exact revenge for Antonio's insults towards Jews. It seems that Antonio's pound of flesh is inevitable, but the clever Portia devises a brilliant strategy to turn the situation around.
