Struggling comedian Rudy Ray Moore (Oscar-nominated actor Eddie Murphy) has a sudden spark of inspiration after a series of failed performances and takes the stage under a different persona, becoming a sensation. Drawing from the street myths of 1970s Los Angeles, Moore transforms into "Dolemite," a cane-wielding pimp and master of raunchy jokes. However, his ambitions go beyond just selling those bootleg records deemed too raunchy for mainstream airplay. Moore persuades a socially conscious playwright (played by Keegan-Michael Key) to write a movie for his second persona, which incorporates kung fu, car chases, and Lady Reed (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), a former backup singer turned his unexpected comedic sidekick. Despite clashes with the arrogant director DeVille Martin (Wesley Snipes) and countless production hurdles in the rundown Dunbar Hotel studio, Moore's "Dolemite" ultimately achieves massive commercial success, becoming a landmark film of the blaxploitation era. Over the past decades, Moore's groundbreaking influence has been celebrated by comedians and rappers alike, and "My Name is Dolemite" is a humorous tribute to an extraordinary genius who created his own legend. Directed by Craig Brewer (Dolemite Is My Name, Empire State), with Emmy and Golden Globe winners Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson) as writers; the production team includes Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated John Davis (Babe, Joy) and Golden Globe-nominated John Fox (Joy) alongside Murphy; the film features an all-star supporting cast including Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Curtis Smith-McPhee, Snoop Dogg, Ron Cephas Jones, Barry Shabaka Henley, T.I., Luenell, Tasha Smith, and Oscar winner Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther) as costume designer.
