David (played by Ben Tibber) is a 12-year-old boy who has lived in a Bulgarian concentration camp since childhood; the outside world is a mystery to him. His parents are dead, and David knows nothing about his origins. The only source of comfort in the camp is an adult named John. Despite this, David’s face shows a weariness that belies his age. Until one day, David is mysteriously arranged to escape from the camp and receives a task: he must deliver a letter to Copenhagen, Denmark, and not trust anyone's advice, which he must remember silently. Thus, David begins his long journey. From Greece to Italy, Switzerland, and Denmark, he must climb mountains and trek long distances to reach Copenhagen. In the outside world, he experiences a freedom he has never tasted and meets kind and warm people. The tension he has built up in his heart gradually softens in the warmth of human kindness. People help him overcome disasters and dangers; the letter in his hand and the beautiful scenery along the way accompany David on his journey to Copenhagen.
