No matter the country or the era, men are the original sin of a woman's life. Deep in the ancient water towns of Jiangnan, a once-pure flower-carver named Hua Diao (played by Zhou Xun) fell in love with the young painter Zheng Aou. Their love was fervent and didn't require a matchmaker's words. Under mutual affection, the two lovers came together. When Hua Diao's father learned the truth, he furiously drove Aou away. Aou promised to return to marry Hua Diao, but he never returned. Soon after, Hua Diao gave birth to a daughter, Qiu Mei. She waited day and night for her beloved to return, only to find it all in vain. As times changed, it quickly moved to the Cultural Revolution period, where Hua Diao (played by Guei Ya Lei) faced immense pressure due to her background and early experiences, which also impacted her beautiful daughter Qiu Mei (played by Gu Mei Hua). Qiu Mei resented her mother’s influence over her life and defiantly married an uneducated man. The sad fates are so similar, perhaps only through experience can one understand what is truly precious...
