No matter the country or the era, men are the original sin of a woman's life. Deep in the ancient water towns of Jiangnan, a once-pure flower-carver named Hua Diao (played by Zhou Xun) fell in love with the young painter Zheng Aou. Their love was fervent and didn't require a matchmaker's words. Under mutual affection, the two lovers came together. When Hua Diao's father learned the truth, he furiously drove Aou away. Aou promised to return to marry Hua Diao, but he never returned. Soon after, Hua Diao gave birth to a daughter, Qiu Mei. She waited day and night for her beloved to return, only to find it all in vain.
